Edmonton Oilers Defeat the New York Islanders 4-1

By EdmontonOilers.com Staff

The Edmonton Oilers have been under scrutiny as earlier this month the Edmonton Oilers General Manager Ken Holland and CEO Jeff Jackson fired the head coach Jay Woodcroft. When Woodcroft was fired, the Oilers had a record of 3-9-1. It is said that the decision to fire the head coach was made right around the time the Oilers lost to the San Jose Sharks. Their new head coach is Kris Knoblauch, this being his first time coaching an NHL team as he has previously coached within the AHL and OHL.

Going into this game not only were the players for the Edmonton Oilers trying to play good hockey for their new coach, but some players had more pressure added on their shoulders. Especially as recently, there have been rumors surrounding a Leon Draisaitl trade due to his decrease in scoring this season thus far.

40 seconds into the first period, Mathew Barzal from the New York Islanders scored. The New York Islanders are seventh in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 5-5-3 going into the game.

Leon Draisaitl scored with five minutes remaining in the first period, making it his sixth goal in the 2023-24 season thus far. His goal was the one to tie the game to 1-1 in the first period.

During the second period, both teams were on the same level defensively and offensively as both teams were making sure to keep the pressure on. The second period was filled with shots being fired on both nets, but each respective goaltender (Ilya Sorokin for the New York Islanders and Stuart Skinner for the Edmonton Oilers) did not allow any shots to enter.

The third period continued with both teams applying the same pressure as in the second period. A few seconds after the Edmonton Oilers were on the power play, Zach Hyman scored a goal, making the Edmonton Oilers lead 2-1 with the New York Islanders trailing behind.

Connor McDavid scored, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Edmonton Oilers.

Evander Kane scored on an empty net, making the score 4-1 with two minutes remaining in the third period. This led to the Edmonton Oilers securing their win against the New York Islanders. With this win, Kris Knoblauch got his first win not only within the NHL but also as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers ended the night with a record of 4-9-1, while the New York Islanders ended off with a record of 5-6-3.
