The Edmonton Oilers announced last Wednesday that forward Evander Kane will be out for three to four months after getting his left wrist cut by a skate blade in a game last Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The incident occurred just three and a half minutes into the second period when Tampa Bay defenseman Philippe Myers hit Kane near the boards, resulting in him falling to the ice. While Kane was down on the ice, Lightning forward Pat Maroon accidentally skated over Kane’s left wrist, cutting it. Kane immediately began applying pressure to it while he skated toward Edmonton’s bench as quickly as he possibly could. Maroon noticed what had happened and was signaling toward the benches for help. The game was stopped for several minutes while the training staffs of both teams treated him. He was transported to a hospital after he was stabilized and underwent surgery that night. The Oilers went on the win the game 3-2.

Kane released a statement the next day where he said, “Thank you all for the kind wishes and prayers from over the past several hours,” also stating that he was still in shock from the incident when he typed the statement. He also thanked both Edmonton’s and Tampa’s training staffs along with all the doctors and paramedics who rushed to help him. He added, “without all of you, I know things would've been much worse and I'm sincerely grateful.”

Kane was selected by the Atlanta Thrashers with the fourth overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and relocated to Winnipeg with the team in 2011 to become the Jets. He played with the Jets until they traded him to the Buffalo Sabres in February of 2015. He was traded yet again in February of 2018, this time to the San Jose Sharks. His contract was terminated by the Sharks in January 2022 because he violated COVID-19 protocols. Just a couple of weeks later he signed a one-year contract with the Oilers. The Oilers signed him to a four-year contract worth $20.5 million during the 2022 offseason.

So far this season Evander Kane has five goals and eight assists for a total of thirteen points in fourteen games played.
