Ersson v. Sandstrom

Amy Irvin

Did the Flyers make the right decision in making Carter Hart’s backup Samuel Ersson? Let’s take a look. In Ersson’s career, he has 16 games played with seven wins which includes one shutout. Last year, he was top three in the NHL for young goalies with hot starts. He had six wins in his first six NHL starts. Based off of this, Danny Briere made the decision to put Ersson as Hart’s backup. However, there are some reservations and concerns that need to be addressed. Ersson had lost each game that he started this season with the exception of his first win on Friday night. His save percentage is a little low, with it being .882%. His goals against average is 3.29.

Felix Sandstrom, on the other hand, has 23 games played and only three wins. This is a little bit concerning, but his save percentage seems to be a little better. Goals against average is about 3.63 with a save percentage of .887%. Felix Sandstrom also has more NHL games under his belt. While Sandstrom has won less, we also have to look at the defense and offense that were in front of him at the time. For me, Ersson is a little too immature for the NHL, and needs at least another season with the Phantoms. He has shows some great potential, but the Flyers need to look at the whole picture and not just what’s in the past.
