Last year, Briere was named special assistant to the general manager. On Friday, the Flyersโ€™ organization announced that Chuck Fletcher was fired and named Briere as the interim general manager.

Briere has a difficult job ahead of him: the Flyers are currently tied with the Arizona Coyotes for 27th in the league with 59 points.

His main goal as general manager will be transforming the organization into a Stanley Cup contendor. Transforming the Flyers will require opening up cap space, acquiring draft capital, building through the draft, and acquiring players with modern NHL skills. In todayโ€™s NHL, speed and skill are more impactful than the playerโ€™s size. The Flyers will need to acquire faster and more skilled players to compete in the modern NHL.

Briere is a former NHL player. He spent 17 years in the NHL and six of those years with the Flyers. During his time with the Flyers, Briere led the team to game six of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. That same year, he recorded 30 points in the playoffs which broke the record for points in the post season by a Flyer. Briere also recorded his fifth hat trick while playing for the Flyers.

After retiring in 2015, Briere remained involved with the Flyers. In 2017 he was appointed to run day-to-day operations for the Flyerโ€™s owned Maine Mariners before being appointed to special assistant to the general manager in 2022.

Briereโ€™s NHL playing experience coupled with his management experience could be just what the Flyers need as they enter the multi-year process of rebuilding.
