Couturier . . . Is He Still Worth the Hype?
Going into the 2023-2024 season, the player that is one of the most-watched on the Flyers is center Sean Couturier. His stats from the past are 721 games played, 180 goals, 280 assists, totaling for 460 points. Couturier is also a +82, which isn’t too shabby. The decline started in the 2021-2022 season, when he left about halfway through due to a back injury. He didn’t play any of last season. Couturier is now in his thirties and coming off of a severe back injury, and because of this fact, I just don’t see him being the same player he was 2-3 seasons ago.
I saw him in training camp and in the preseason games, and you can definitely see some of the cobwebs. Losing 0-6 to the Devils did not help matters. After winning the Selke trophy at 28 years old, the Flyers signed Couturier to an eight-year, $ 62-million contract extension. At 28, this would put him at 36 years old when the contract is up. This just didn’t look like a smart move due to his age. Maybe because it’s been such a long time, but I don’t have faith in him like I once did. He needs to prove himself to all of the fans in Philadelphia that he’s worth keeping.
