Carolina Hurricanes: Week In Review Part 1

The Carolina Hurricanes started off 2023 with a four-game week, and it is now one that the team is looking to put behind them. Head Coach Rod Brind’Amour and company only managed to pull three out of the possible eight points from the week, and most of the games were ones they felt they controlled going into the third period. Let’s take a look at these games:

January 1st @ New Jersey

The Canes started of the new year with an away tilt on New Years Day in New Jersey. The first period saw both teams head to the rooms scoreless, as Antti Raanta (Carolina) and Mackenzie Blackwood (New Jersey) stood tall in net. The second period saw the two offenses get going, as Derek Stepan (3) put the Canes on the board at 8:00 into the second. Jack Hughes (21) tied the game up for the Devils at the 16:18 mark. Sebastian Aho (12) was able to take advantage of a Mackenzie Blackwood mistake at the 18:14 mark to give the Canes a 2-1 lead heading into the third.

The third period was a highly offensive affair, as Jesper Bratt (13) knotted the game up at the 6:15 mark. The goals kept coming during the first half of the period, as Derek Stepan (4) put in his second of the night at 8:04, and Nico Hischier (16) tied the game back up at 8:38. This would send the game into overtime where nothing would be decided.
