Cam Talbot traded to the Ottawa Senators

A surprising trade arose, July 12, when it was confirmed that Cam Talbot of the Minnesota Wild had been traded to the Ottawa Senators for Filip Gustavsson, as per the league Twitter.

This was a straight goalie for goalie trade in which both teams saw their organization’s benefit.

Cam Talbot recently completed his second season with the Minnesota Wild, where he was highly respected as both a player and a person. He gave Minnesota the steady goaltending they needed and was even selected to be a goalie in the NHL All-Star game this past season.

Last year in many interviews, he always talked about how special his team was and that it was unlike any other he has been a part of. This makes it very hard for Wild fans to see him go because of how loved he was by Minnesota.

A big change that ended up impacting Talbot was the Wild adding Marc-Andre Fleury. During the end of the regular season, Fleury and Talbot were splitting games 50-50. However when the playoffs started, Talbot became the backup goaltender and only played in the last game that the Wild played in the playoffs.

This did not make Talbot happy, and there had been some recent rumors that he would not be content splitting the top goalie spot for a whole season. Finally on Tuesday it was announced that the Wild would receive Filip Gustavsson for Cam Talbot.

Filip Gustavsson is a young goaltender that has not played too many games in the NHL, giving him the possibility to have a bright future. This trade also helps out Minnesota financially, while giving Ottawa another starting goalie to complete their team. There will be many mixed feelings about this trade, as many Minnesotans feel as if Talbots team that he carried last year had been stripped away by the addition of Fleury.
