Hockey jerseys, or “sweaters” as they are called by players, are an iconic part of the sport. No other sports jersey possesses the same levels of uniqueness and quality when compared to hockey sweaters.

While the Chicago Blackhawks have been abysmal this season, with a 14-32-4 record, Hawks fans can find solace in the fact that they have the best jerseys. The Atlantic surveyed 200 current players in the NHL to find out which team has the most visually appealing jersey. 21.23 percent of players answered that their favorite was the Blackhawks black, red, and white sweater.

The most popular jerseys were from the Original Six teams (Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers). The Detroit Red Wings jerseys took the runner-up spot with 15.75 percent of the vote and the New York Rangers finished just behind the Red Wings with 15.07 percent of the vote.

Some notable non-Original Six teams that finished with a substantial portion of the vote were, the new expansion team the Seattle Kraken (4.11 percent), and the Arizona Coyotes (3.42 percent) with their creative designs on their sweaters.

When looking at these numbers, it is not surprising that the Original Six teams are at the top of these rankings. NHL fans hold a special reverence for the Original Six teams that is not seen in many other sports. It is interesting that the clear frontrunners, the Blackhawks and Red Wings, are both midwestern teams with very similar color schemes that both include white and red. It has been shown that the color red evokes strong emotions which could be a contributing factor.

While the Blackhawks have not been playing well on the ice, at least they are getting recognized for their fashionable jerseys. The Blackhawks are currently on a four game losing streak and are hoping to right the ship at home against the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday Feb. 7.
