Another Overtime loss for the Caps
The Capitals lost to the Golden Knights Tuesday, in overtime
On November 1st, 2022 the Washington Capitals were back at the Capital One Arena to take on the Vegas Golden Knights. The Golden Knights are currently ranked #1 in the Pacific Division (8-2-0) while the Capitals sit at #5 in the Metropolitan Division (5-4-1).
Capitals defenseman John Carlson, who is under day-to-day evaluation for a lower-body injury, did not play in Tuesday night’s game. Instead, defenseman Trevor Van Riemsdyck stepped up into the defensive lineup in place of Carlson.
Charles Lindrgen was in net for his third game of the season and made some incredible saves throughout.
An early power play for the Capitals came less than five minutes into the first. Marcus Johanson took advantage of the power play and was able to secure the lead for the Capitals of 1-0.
As Vegas fired off a shot, Beck Malenstyn dove for a double-legged slide block. He certainly put his all into the game but unfortunately, it left Malenstyn injured and unable to play the rest of the game.
Hopefully Malenstyn will make a quick recovery before Thursday’s game in Detroit, since the Capitals are currently missing Tom Wilson, Nicklas Backstom, Connor Brown, TJ Oshie, and John Carlson.
Seriously, can the Capitals go one game without an injury?
With 1:05 left in the first period, Jack Eichel knocked one into the net off of a power play tying it up 1-1 at the end of the first. Vegas had an impressive first period, outshooting Washington by almost double, as they ended the first period with eleven shots on goal compared to the Capitals five shots.
One minute into the second period, Dylan Strome wins the draw and passes to Van Reimsdyck who scores, giving Washington their second lead of the night. Washington really put in work in the second period, matching Vegas’s shots on goal, and ending the period with 17 shots compared to the Golden Knights’ 19. Lindgren was able to keep the Golden Knights off the board in the second period with some incredible saves.
A back-and-forth third period but Vegas was able to tie things up at 2-2 with only 6:02 left in regulation time. However, the ever persistent Capitals pushed to the bitter end. Garnet Hathway landed one into the back of the net but unfortunately it was just a little too late. Hathaway's goal came a mere second after time had expired. So, the two teams moved to over-time.

1:35 into overtime, Vegas solidified a win. This was the second night in a row that the Capitals lost in overtime. Furthermore, the Golden Knights kept Alex Ovechkin off the board, and so he sits at 785 career goals, just one shy of Gordie Howe’s record for most NHL goals with one franchise.
