2024 NHL All-Star Captains Announced

This year’s NHL All-Star Weekend is set to kick off on Feb. 1, with a Player Draft happening on All-Star Thursday. The players will be drafted by the newly selected captains, found in a list that was released earlier this week. Each captain will select 11 players from a pool of handpicked and fan voted players. The games will then be held on Saturday, Feb. 3. So what do the NHL All-Star captains look like?

Each team will be run by an official NHL player, along with a celebrity captain. In addition to this, teams will also include an assistant captain, which in this case, is a player on the captain’s current team. Every NHL division will have captain representation as there are players from the Eastern, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific divisions running the teams.

Team Matthews: Captain - Auston Matthew, Celebrity Captain - Justin Bieber, Assistant Captain - Morgan Rielly

The 2024 All-Star game will be held in Toronto, Canada. To nobody’s surprise, this means that Auston Matthews was bound to be one of the captains. A superstar for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Matthews is currently leading the NHL in goals, with 38 in just 44 games. He is perhaps the most loved man in the city, so this pick makes a lot of sense. He will be captain next to Justin Bieber, who is a Canadian born musician, and a very outspoken Maple Leafs fan. Morgan Rielly, a great defenseman for the Maple Leafs, was named assistant captain to Matthews and Bieber. Team Matthews will be wearing blue jerseys during the games; a smart marketing move to keep the Toronto players in the cities colors.

Team McDavid: Captain - Connor McDavid, Celebrity Captain - Will Arnett, Assistant Captain - Leon Draisaitl

Connor McDavid is one of the best athletes in the world at the moment. Year in and year out, he is either the NHL scoring leader, or an honorable mention for the award. McDavid will be representing the Pacific Division in this year’s games, which was a very easy decision for the league to make. Comedian and actor, Will Arnett, will be the celebrity captain for the team. Arnett has no affiliation with the Edmonton Oilers, McDavid’s NHL team, but he is a true fan of the game. Leon Draisaitl, one of the league’s best players behind McDavid, is the assistant captain of choice. The team will wear white jerseys for the weekend.

Team MacKinnon: Captain - Nathan MacKinnon, Celebrity Captain - Tate McRae, Assistant Captain - Cale Makar

The entire NHL world knows the name Nathan MacKinnon, yet it still feels like he gets put under the radar for most of the season. He is finally getting the respect that he deserves this year with an All-Star captain position. MacKinnon is the heart and sole of the Colorado Avalanche, and is why they are competing for the first seed in the Western Conference. Tate McRae, a singer and dancer who has her own ties to the league, will be the celebrity captain. In addition to McRae being an All-Star captain, she will also be the headline performance for the games on Feb. 3. The star Avalanche player next to MacKinnon, Cale Makar, will be the assistant captain. Team MacKinnon has announced that they are wearing yellow jerseys.

Team Hughes: Co-Captains - Jack and Quinn Hughes, Celebrity Captain - Michael Bublé

Two out of the three Hughes brothers are getting their shot at being captains for the games this year. Team Hughes is a little different from the other teams in the sense that they have co-captains, instead of one captain and an assistant. Jack and Quinn Hughes are two of the most electrifying players in the NHL, while playing for separate teams (Jack on the New Jersey Devils and Quinn on the Vancouver Canucks). They will now get the chance to play on the same team together in Toronto, which many are excited about. Jack Hughes is still unsure if he will be able to play in the All-Star game, due to a recent injury, but is still a captain nonetheless. Next to them will be Michael Bublé, a Canadian singer and songwriter. Bublé is a huge Vancouver Canucks fan, so him and Quinn Hughes should get along very well together. Team Hughes will wear red at the All-Star games.

The NHL All-Star player selections are all set, with some very talented players in the mix this year. While the Player Draft is happening on Thursday, Feb. 1, the captains probably already have a very good idea as to who they want on their team. While having access to some of the best players in the league, the teams should be very exciting.

Once again, the 2024 NHL All-Star game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, with a draft and different competitions happening in the days before that.
