NFL Throwback Uniforms Returning in 2023

In 2022, the NFL finally allowed teams to start wearing throwback uniforms again. The reason teams could not wear the throwback uniforms prior to 2022 was due to the one-shell rule. This rule limited teams to one set of helmet shells, this meant that a team could only wear one helmet regardless of the uniform worn. Now that the rule is gone, teams can take advantage of the new rule by adding an alternate color. A few teams brought back throwback uniforms last year but now another four will be adding an alternate uniform in the upcoming 2023 season.

The Eagles plan to bring back their iconic “Kelly Green” uniforms in 2023. Philadelphia has had slightly different versions of the jersey but the team plans on bringing back the uniforms that were last worn in the 90s. The “Kelly Green” was last worn from 1985-1995, the uniform was then replaced by the current color “Midnight Green”. As an Eagles fan who never got to see these uniforms worn in their prime, I’m very excited to see them displayed on the field for the first time since ‘95.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers plan to wear the creamsicle uniform in 2023. This uniform is a fan favorite across the league, not just with Tampa fans. I personally love the uniform, whenever I use the Bucs in Madden I always put them in the creamsicle uniform. Something about the jersey just pops, it’s a shame the jersey isn’t the team’s main uniform, but hey, that’s my opinion. The creamsicle jersey was worn from the franchise’s inaugural season in 1976 and was last worn as the main uniform in 1996. The jersey was worn once a year from 2009-2012. I speak for every NFL fan, we have been waiting on this one.

Seattle Seahawks

Seattle plans to debut their throwback uniforms against the Cleveland Browns in week eight. I’ve always liked these uniforms, the silver and blue work very well together. Though I do like the uniform, I’m not sure I can rate it over the current Seattle uniform. That uniform is so iconic to me, it immediately makes me think of the legendary 2013 Seahawks. This will be the first time that Seattle will be wearing the uniform since the 2001 season, back then the Seahawks were in the AFC. Regardless, I’m excited for this uniform to debut, I just wish I could have seen Russell Wilson wear it one time.

Tennessee Titans

In 1997, the Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee to become the Titans. The Titans still use the same colors from the original Oilers uniform but they have put their own spin on it. In the past, the Titans have worn Oilers AFL throwbacks from the 1960s, they have never worn the 1980s-1990s era jerseys. Not to sound redundant, but I love these jerseys. I’ve always been a big fan of baby blue being used in sports. Some teams that do a great job are UNC, Manchester City, and the Los Angeles Chargers. I really like how the small amount of red pops due to the overlaying blue, it’s just a great design overall.
