Will Penalties Still Be an Issue For Dallas This Season?

Pre-season games have just begun for all teams around the NFL.

The Dallas Cowboys visited Denver in their pre-season opener this year which resulted in a 17-7 loss. It’s never good to overreact to the scoreboard in week one of a pre-season game, or better yet, overreact to about anything really because at the end of the day it’s just pre-season as everyone says.

It’s always great getting a first look at rookies, new signings, and players you won’t normally see every Sunday, but after Saturday nights game, Dallas fans are worried about one thing, and that’s penalties.

Dallas committed 17 penalties in week one of their pre-season game after head coach Mike McCarthy preached discipline all off-season. This stems from the embarrassing divisional round playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers last season in which Dallas almost committed more penalties than points scored. The lack of discipline really showed itself in the most important game of the year for Dallas and although it is week one of pre-season, Dallas is still not disciplined.

Many Dallas Cowboys media members took to Twitter to voice their concerns about the amount of penalties on Saturday. Volume Sports producer Skywalker Steele stated “Penalties will be an emphasis after this game. Again.” Host of Locked on Cowboys podcast Marcus Mosher stated “This is really a typical Cowboys game, tons of penalties.” and Dallas Cowboys content creator FootsDaKing states “This team is not disciplined.” With penalties being the big takeaway from game one of the pre-season, it shows how much Dallas fans have hung onto last seasons playoff heartbreaker.

Normally, penalties in a pre-season game mean nothing, but its an area of concern for Dallas. If this continues all throughout the year, expect some even more heat to be put upon head coach Mike McCarthy.

They have plenty of time to clean it up, and if they truly want to be successful this year and make some noise in the NFC, they have to play disciplined football. So far that has been the challenge under McCarthy, only time will tell whether this continues or improvements are made.
