Why the Lions had one of the worst NFL Drafts
The Detriot Lions absolutely have failed in this years NFL Draft. Why is this the case though? Here are three reasons why Detriot failed to meet expectations in the NFL Draft:
Drafting a running back in the first round
This was the first problem with the Detroit Lions issues in the draft, they believed that it was a good idea to draft a running back in the first round. While Atlanta did the same exact thing, the Lions absolutely reached on drafting Alabama Crimson Tide running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs was the second best running back prospect in the draft however, he was projected to go in the second round. Lions later on ended up trading DβAndre Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles.
2. Reaching in the first two rounds
Once again Jahmyr Gibbs is a reach in this draft, however so is Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell who the Lions used their second of two first round picks on. While both players are not bad whatsoever, they could have been second round picks. Grabbing a first round need would have been a better move then what Detroit did in the first round.
3. Lower ranked players drafted too high
While Detroit did make a better impression in the later rounds, the needs that were drafted were a little too high at certain positions. Yes drafting Sam Laporta at tight end was a great decision by the Lions however there is a lot of question whether or not he is too high. Kirk Ferentz has been known for producing many great tight ends which is why Iowa is called Tight End University but the debate will be whether or not Laporta was drafted too high.
