Week Two Preview: Seahawks at Lions

The Detroit Lions look to keep the momentum rolling against the Seattle Seahawks in their home opener of the 2023 season.

Concerns arose from both teams after their respective performances in their week one games.

The Lions’ biggest problem was their abysmal defensive play in the first half where they let up two touchdowns on plays that the secondary looked clueless on their positions and assignments.

If the Lions stick to their second half gameplan of running primarily man coverage schemes they can easily hold the Seahawks to under two touchdowns this game.

Dan Campbell’s comments on the utilization of rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs implies that he will see more touches moving forward in the season. If they can get Gibbs rolling on offense with designed outside runs and screens we can expect more offensive production than week one.

The Seahawks offense sputtered against the Rams with quarterback Geno Smith returning to the Geno that the league knew before last year.

Seahawks fans are hoping Smith bounces back in week two to stop the discourse of him just being a one-year wonder.

The defense was not any better in their week one matchup giving up multiple big plays to a wide receiver core that is missing its biggest weapon.

Both Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell put up 119 yards receiving against a secondary that looked promising last season with breakout rookie cornerback Tariq Woolen.

Last year, in the matchup between these two teams, the game was decided on a controversial third-down penalty that resulted in a Seahawks touchdown giving them the 48-45 win.

Barring a resurgence in the Seahawks offense, the Lions look like the favorite to win the week two matchup with the Seahawks being a 5.5 point underdog at the time of writing this.
