Week Two Preview: Chargers vs. Titans
The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off of a tough Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins. After trading offensive blows and carrying the lead into the final two-minute warning, the Chargers watched as the Dolphins stormed back and took the lead, ultimately winning the game. Despite how disappointing the Chargers’ loss was to the Dolphins, it was not as disappointing as the Tennessee Titans’ Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The game was an ugly one, with a final score of 16-15 and a bad showing for both offenses.
Both teams, at a record of 0-1, are looking to rebound in Week 2. Their game will be played on Sunday at 1 P.M. ET at Tennessee’s home stadium in Nashville.
Preview
Just looking at the numbers, the Chargers offense seems to be in great shape. They sit in the top 5 in almost every basic statistic. It is a tale of two sides, however, as the defense is in the exact opposite category. At 32nd in the league in almost every category, they are dead last in everything except rushing YPG, where they sit at a surprisingly impressive 6th in the league.
Chargers Offense:
Yards Per Game: 433.0 (2nd)
Points Per Game: 34.0 (4th)
Passing Yards Per Game: 199 (14th)
Rushing Yards Per Game: 234 (1st)
Chargers Defense:
Yards Allowed Per Game: 536.0 (32nd)
Points Allowed Per Game: 36 (32nd)
Passing Yards Allowed: 466.0 (32nd)
Rushing Yards Allowed: 70 (6th)
As for the Titans, the offense sits at an average clip in every basic category except for the most important one, scoring, in which they are near the bottom of the league. As for the defense, they seem to be stout overall, but they are susceptible to a strong pass attack.
Titans Offense:
Yards Per Game: 285.0 (16th)
Points Per Game: 15.0 (26th)
Passing Yards Per Game: 181.0 (18th)
Rushing Yards Per Game 104.0 (13th)
Titans Defense:
Total Yards Allowed Per Game: (25th)
Points Allowed Per Game: 16.0 (8th)
Passing Yards Allowed: 282.0 (28th)
Rushing Yards Allowed: 69.0 (5th)

Taking a look at injuries, Titans cornerback Kristian Fulton is playing through an injury and safety Amani Hooker is in concussion protocol. As for the Chargers, running back Austin Ekeler and defensive end Joey Bosa are both dealing with injuries and did not practice on Wednesday. Add to this that Chargers star wide receiver Mike Williams is playing through an injury as well, and it is clear that the Titans are definitely the healthier team.
Outcome
Two very different teams will meet at Nissan Stadium this Sunday. Both teams are looking to avoid going 0-2 to start the season, so expect a tough game from both sides. However, although the Titans defense is better on paper than the Dolphins defense that the Chargers just faced, it will be a tall order for them to contain the Chargers potent offense. At the same time, a struggling Ryan Tannehill that threw three interceptions last week is not the same Dolphin’s pass attack that the Chargers had to deal with last week. If the Chargers can contain Derrick Henry, or at least force Tannehill to win the game instead of Henry, do not expect the Titans’ offense to keep up with the Chargers.
Prediction: Chargers 24, Titans 14
