Week 14 Recap: Giants vs chargers
The story of this game was none other than this team needs a big rebuild. We’ve encountered this change before in the last 5 losing seasons and now we need an even bigger one because this football team could not look any more dreadful. Whether or not this team is worse than the 2017 Giants squad, Gettleman needs to go, Judge and the rest of the coaching staff need to go, and this offensive line needs to be seriously reconstructed. If Giants fan did not realize it going into the season, certainly now it is much clearer. It was evident, Gettleman refusing to change the offensive line and getting rid of their best lineman, would ultimately become an issue.
As for the game, Herbert had his way and looked utterly poised in the pocket all day. To top it off, his cannon of an arm launched a 59-yard touchdown to Jalen Guyton to end the first half, absolutely shattering any chances of the Giants wriggling their way back in the game. Hebert played so well Chase Daniels saw time towards the end of the 4th quarter. Overall, the coverage was lacking as the Chargers utilized all their weapons and the defense saw no momentum whatsoever, apart from a few big stops early courtesy of Leonard Williams and Lorenzo Carter. On the ground, despite only handing it off to Ekeler 12 times, the starting back still averaged 5.6 YPC before exiting the contest due to an ankle injury. However, Justin Jackson and Joshua Kelley filled in nicely combining for 19 carries on 68 yards. In the air Mike Williams continued to torch the Giants downfield and Josh Palmer finished the game with 5 catches for 66 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown score. I would rather not touch too much on the Giants offensive struggles. The Chargers improve to 8-5 as the Giants drop to 4-9, losing their last two.
Shame:
Mike Glennon: under-threw his receivers all day. The interception to end the game was also very embarrassing. Tough matchup and circumstances but as an NFL quarterback, have got to make certain throws.
Kenny Golladay: had a tough day connecting with Glennon. Finished with 2 catches for 15 yards on 8 targets. Has yet to record a touchdown. He has started 9 games.
The fake punt: Not sure why we keep shooting ourselves in the own foot with our other foot already shot from the rest of the team. Special Teams is one of Judge’s strengths, but as of late it has been his worse nightmare.
The double lateral: Very embarrassing and unnecessary. Not to mention they ran another flea-flicker on the same drive. Do not know what Kitchens was thinking with this play call.
Cornerbacks: Jarren Williams and Aaron Robinson struggled with Adoree’ Jackson out of the lineup and Darnay Holmes on IR.
Injuries: Jones, Barkley, Shepherd, Golladay, and Toney have played a combined 6 snaps together on the field so far this season. The Giants currently have 21 players on IR, the most in the league (via Spotrac).
Highlights:
Saquon Barkley: Do not let the numbers fool you, Saquon still struggled running the ball against one of the worst run defenses in the league, but still looked much better than recent weeks. This was the first time Saquon has run for more than 60 yards this season. He has started 8 games. His 18-yard touchdown catch was the play of the game for the Giants.
Kyle Rudolph: Had a 60-yard catch and run in the first quarter. Thought I’d mention this.
Elijah Penny: Another bright spot in this offensive pit of darkness. Had a 3-yard touchdown catch while his family was in the building.
2022 Draft: Giants currently own the No. 5 & 6 picks.
What to expect:
Daniel Jones: Going to see doctors for further tests on his neck Monday, December 13th (via Jordan Raanan). Looked comfortable in warm-ups prior to the Chargers game.
Week 15: Giants travel back to the east coast to take on a hot Dallas team in the Meadowlands. If you thought the Chargers defense was trouble, we are in for a real treat come Sunday. Cowboys rank 1st in total offensive yards and 2nd in offensive points scored.
Chicago Bears: Next opponents: MIN, @SEA, NYG, @MIN
