Ty Johnson’s Future With The Jets
Can Ty Johnson still have an impact on this New York Jets roster? The answer is unknown, as it seems that the Jets running back room is flooded with players who are more than capable of contributing to the offense. This can only mean more competition amongst the running backs. More specifically, between veterans Ty Johnson, Tevin Coleman, La’Mical Perine, and rookie Zonovan Knight.
This sort of competition will hopefully bring the best out of these players who are hoping to reserve their roster spots. Ty Johnson, who is now entering his third year in the Jets' offensive system, has been one of the main contributors to the offense from day one. Johnson was acquired by the Jets from the Detroit Lions in 2020. He was a key special teams player in all 16 games of his rookie campaign in 2019. In his first season (2019), Johnson finished with 63 rushing attempts for 273 yards, starting one game.
Johnson, who is now entering his fourth year in the league, has much more experience under his belt since joining the Jets in 2020. Johnson has provided the Jets with the ability to run through tackles and somewhat of a power running back position. He has the great talent of being versatile and breaking tackles, but compared to Tevin Coleman, he has the better speed in his burst through gaps.
One has to ask, who is the more viable option at running back? It will depend on how well Coleman and Johnson perform during training camp and pre-season. The Jets intend on having a joint practice with the neighboring New York Giants. Anticipate this to have high competitiveness between the two rival squads who don't get the chance to meet very often. This may bring out the best in some players.
Last season was Johnson's best performance so far in his career as he played 16 games, tallying 238 rushing yards for two touchdowns and 372 receiving yards and two touchdowns. It is clear that he is an impact player for the Jets offense and offers versatility as being able to catch the ball effectively. However, it is going to come down to the productivity and opportunities that either of these players can get leading into the regular season.
Both Coleman and Johnson have experience within this offensive system and will look to use it to their advantage. Once again, this is a tough decision for the coaching staff, but it is a good issue to have for your team because you can never have too many playmakers. Look out for the Jets running back committee as training camp kicks off with high competition!
