Trey Lance Traded to Dallas

Dallas, Texas (PSF) - As preseason gets ready to end, NFL teams have started to finalize their rosters for the upcoming season. One roster move that turned heads all over the league was the 49ers naming Sam Darnold as the team’s second-string backup. The move itself is something to note, although the more entertaining outlook was seeing that Trey Lance was officially the third-string quarterback. Lance has had a unique fall from grace since being drafted. The 49ers traded three first-round picks to Miami to move up and take Lance at third overall. Since being drafted, Lance has been plagued by injuries each year. As of no surprise, Lance was expected to be traded. It took only two days for the quarterback to be moved, he was dealt to the Cowboys for only a 2024 fourth-round pick.

As stated above, Lance being traded was not a surprise. It was a challenging situation but the 49ers felt more comfortable playing both Brock Purdy and Darnold over Lance. The depth chart tells us exactly how San Fransisco felt. Yes, I saw Lance being traded, but to Dallas? I just didn’t see that one coming. I like the move for the Cowboys because you get a boom-or-bust player for only a fourth-round pick. I also like the move for Lance as well. This sounds so cliche though it’s true, maybe this guy just needed a change of scenery. One can only imagine what Lance has felt over the last few seasons. First, he continues to deal with injuries, then he sees the last pick of the 2022 draft go and take his team all the way to the NFC Championship game, and on top of that, he is beaten out in camp behind both Darnold and Purdy. Overall, a difficult situation but I will be rooting for Lance whenever he gets his chance.

Last, there is more thing about this trade that needs to be discussed, How does this affect Dak Prescott? Prescott is coming off a down year and has been receiving a decent amount of flack this off-season. I’m sure he has confidence in himself, but seeing this move made right before the season will get his attention at the least. In my opinion, this trade strikes me as a way of Jerry Jones trying to let Prescott know that he needs to play better or he will eventually be traded. With Prescott’s contract constantly looming over him at all times, he will continue to face this pressure until he plays at an elite level for an extended period.
