The Rise of Breece Hall

It’s safe to say that New York Jets rookie Breece Hall has blown away expectations for the Jets.

The team made a trade with the neighboring New York Giants for the running back out of Iowa State. This trade involved the Giants acquiring both the 38th and 146th overall picks from the Jets in exchange for the 36th overall selection. Nonetheless, this was one of the biggest steals in this year's draft.

Breece Hall was integrated into the NFL after a slow start in a week one matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Second year running back Michael Carter took the leading role as he was able to create great runs out of nothing. The Jets were without Zach Wilson at the time and had former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco take over the reins for the first three weeks of the season. Luckily, Carter showed that he is one of the more elusive running backs in the league, as he had a 99.4 elusive grade on PFF last season which ranked third amongst all running backs, according to nyjets.com.

In this game, Michael Carter had 10 carries for 60 yards and 7 receptions for 40 yards. Hall was only given 6 carries for 23 yards and 6 receptions for 38 yards. There was a concern that Hall wasn’t being utilized correctly, but in the following week against the Browns, Hall had a much larger workload.

It is worth noting that with Joe Flacco at the helm of the offense, the offensive scheme was different compared to with Wilson, which is a reason for Hall’s slow start. Needless to say, Hall has moved on and has been the most important part of the offense. In the historic comeback victory against the Browns, Hall tallied 7 carries for 50 yards and one 10-yard reception touchdown.

Hall’s best game this season thus far has come against the Miami Dolphins in a game where the Jets were seemingly unstoppable with the run game. Hall had 18 carries for 97 yards with a touchdown and two receptions for 100 yards. Hall can take over the game with both his legs and through the air. Hall has already been awarded Pepsi rookie of the week, vs Steelers, and would have gotten it against the Dolphins again if it weren't for the outstanding performance of teammate Sauce Gardner.

Hall and Carter have the opportunity to be a top-five running back duo in the league if offensive coordinator Mike Lafleur continues to utilize both players correctly.

Both players offer unique skills that can help take this offense to new heights. The sky's the limit for these young studs!
