The Quarterbacks Affected the Most by the Justin Herbert Extension

The new Justin Herbert extension has been another that has increased the quarterback market and the value teams will have to give up for their star play callers. I have put together a list of players I feel will be affected the most by this new extension.

1. Joe Burrow

There were reports coming out that Herbert and Burrow were waiting for one or the other to sign an extension before giving their asking price to their respective teams. Burrow and Herbert are one of the most popular QB comparisons analysts and fans use. They both come from the same draft class and have put up similar numbers in each of their seasons where they are healthy. Burrow’s asking price will now be around the same as Herbert or even more with Burrow having more accolades at this point in his career compared to Herbert.

Predicted Deal: Five-years 300 million dollars, 195 million dollars guaranteed

2. Trevor Lawrence

Lawrence had his breakout year in 2022 and led the Jaguars in a comeback against the Los Angeles Chargers in his first playoff game. We know how much the Jaguars can pay with their owner Shahid Khan being one of the richest owners in the NFL. The contracts given out to players like Christian Kirk and Shaq Griffin in the past few offseasons has shown that the Jaguars will overpay to keep high-end talent on the team. If Lawrence can have a similar or better performance in this next season he is almost guaranteed to secure an extension in the offseason. The deal could be even more if a quarterback like Burrow sign an extension before Lawrence.

Predicted Deal: Seven-years 350 million dollars, 205 million dollars guaranteed

3. Tua Tagovailoa

Tua is a strange case with his in my opinion lackluster statistics and his injury history since he entered the league. It all depends on if Dolphins management see him as the franchise guy or not and feel the need to extend him. We have seen quarterbacks who many felt were not their team’s guy and turns the public opinion around in one season, a good example being Daniel Jones. If Tua does get an extension I do not feel like it will be a long-term deal and more of a short-year heavy loaded prove it deal for Tua.

Predicted Deal: Three-years 100 million dollars, 55 million dollars guaranteed

4. Jordan Love

This is a player who is not talked about enough considering the situation he will be coming into this upcoming season. If Love can perform well and lead the Packers to a winning record will the Packers decide to extend him off his rookie deal. Love is still very young being from the same draft as Burrow and Herbert. Love becomes a free-agent after the 2024 season and getting him inked to a long-term deal before his value exponentially increases might be the best move for the Packers. His deal would be similar to Tua’s with the salary but the length may be longer.

Predicted Deal: Four-years 140 million dollars, 40 million dollars guaranteed

A majority of these player’s extensions all depend on if they can keep up the level of play they have shown in the past besides Love. The quarterback market continues to grow every offseason while others like the running back market is on the decline. This shift is a clear sign that the league is leaning more into the pass game which will cause the positions that help the pass game like tight-end and wide receiver markets increase with the quarterback market.
