The Bears’ Biggest Offseason Question

The biggest question going into this offseason for the Chicago Bears is what to do at the quarterback position. The Bears have already confirmed that head coach Matt Eberflus will be returning for the 2024 season, which puts the focus on QB Justin Fields.

Fields missed four games this season with injury and since returning has shown enough flashes for Bears fans to chant “We Want Fields,” during their game this past weekend against the Atlanta Falcons.

However, even with his flashes, his production has stayed the same, with Fields only cracking 250+ passing yards in three games this season and only two games where he threw more than one touchdown. His stats are not impressive, and Fields seems to only be able to pass the eye test, with him having middle of the league statistics.

The Bears also hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft that they received from the Carolina Panthers. The position in the draft brings up the question of if the Bears trade Fields and take Southern California QB Caleb Williams, trade down from the first spot for more draft capital or stay at one and take a player like Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to add a new weapon for Fields.

Justin Fields has still not proven to be a franchise quarterback, and the Bears are a franchise/organization that have a poor track record of developing young players, especially quarterback. The Bears have yet to release any reports that could show the public what way they are leaning when it comes to Fields and their plans in the offseason.

It will become clear when we see the players they go after in the offseason. The Bears have a defense that has played over expectation since acquiring defensive end Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders.

If the Bears pursue offensive talent heavily in the offseason it could be a sign that they will stick with Fields and try to put a supporting cast around him for him to succeed.
