Tannehill’s struggles doom the Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (PSF) - Well that was ugly. The Titans lost to the New Orleans Saints in Week One by a score of 16-15. The Titans failed to score a single touchdown, they ended up settling for five field goals. The main reason for these offensive woes was the team’s starting quarterback, Ryan Tannehill.

To say Tannehill struggled is an understatement. The quarterback completed 16 of 34 passes, threw for 198 yards, and also threw three interceptions. Tannehill was the main reason the team lost on Sunday. It was a hard-fought game that could have gone either way. The main factor that contributed to the Titans’ demise was the constant turnovers. If this game was to be played again and you told me that Tennessee would have been able to complete those three drives, I’d say they would have had a decent shot of winning that game. When looking at some of the interceptions, Tannehill was continuously forcing passes to receivers who did not have leverage on their route, resulting in the pass getting picked off. Overall, Tannehill needs to step up and stop with the mistakes, or Tennessee’s post-season hopes will be short-lived.

I’m not one to overreact after Week One, I understand a decent amount of these starters didn’t even get reps in preseason which can result in sloppy play, but this performance from Tannehill should sound an alarm for the Titans organization. It’s no secret that the Titans are looking to move on from Tannehill, they just drafted his potential successor, Will Levis, this spring. Though they are trying to slowly replace him, they can’t at the moment because both Levis and the other backup Malik Willis are not ready to start in the NFL. If the starter’s play doesn’t improve, this season’s hopes will go down the drain. This play is just not good enough to consistently win games in the NFL. If this continues and the Titans play themselves out of a playoff spot, I think we could see Levis start some games just to see how ready he really is. But again, this is just week one so take Tannehill’s performance with a grain of salt.
