Takeaways From Titans new Stadium deal

The Tenessee Titans recently struck a deal with Nashville's Mayor John Cooper to build a new stadium. It was reported that it will be built on the east side of Nissan Stadium and that completion can hopefully be completed by 2026.

In the meantime, a lot of Titans fans including myself question what the new stadium will feature.

In this article, I will highlight the supposedly key features of the new stadium and give my takeaways on it. Do note that I am not a Tennesee native and I have never been to Tennessee ever in my life. Although hopefully, I can go to a Titans game at Nissan Stadium before the new stadium arrives.

  1. The new Titans stadium will be enclosed with a dome.

The decision for a dome comes with the ability to not only stray away from the weather conditions but to also host large events.

The Titans current home, Nissan Stadium currently is in need of renovation after it was found that the stadium’s concrete exterior has been deteriorating due to inclement weather. Also renovating the stadium would cost up to $1.8 billion which is just a little less than the estimated $2 billion cost for the new stadium.

The plan for hosting large events comes with potentially hosting the Super Bowl, College Football Playoff, NCAA March Madness, Wrestlemania and much more.

What is so interesting about this decision to have a dome is that the Titans actually played in a dome stadium as the then Houston Oilers played in the Houston Astrodome. The Oilers became the first NFL team to have a stadium with a roof and the Houston Astrodome was the world’s first multi-purpose domed sports stadium. It was also then deemed the “Eight Wonder of the World” when it opened in 1965.

2. The new Titans stadium will be played on artificial turf.

Coincidentally enough, the Oilers were also the first professional football team to play on artificial turf called AstroTurf.

Aside from that, artificial turf has very much been a talking point when it comes to player injuries these days. Odell Beckham Jr suffered a torn ACL during his play in last year’s Super Bowl and spoke heavily on wanting the NFL to get rid of artificial turf altogether.

The Raiders and Cardinals play on natural grass while housing an indoor stadium themselves by having a retractable grass field tray that is able to roll in and out of the stadium when it does need sunlight.

However, it has been reported that there is not enough room for a grass field that can be rolled out of the stadium.

The Titans will just have to try and reminisce about playing on artificial turf just like the old Oilers used to.
