Patriots Hire Demarcus Covington as Defensive Coordinator
The New England Patriots have offically promoted defensive line coach Demarcus Covington to defensive coordinator. This will be New England’s first defensive coordinator since the 2017 season where Matt Patricia was the offical play caller on the defensive side of the ball before taking the head coaching job for the Detroit Lions. With the Patriots parting ways with Bill Belichick in the offseason, the staff has made a huge shuffle going into the offseason with the hiring of Jerod Mayo.
Covington has been part of the Patriots coaching staff since 2017 and once again it is an inside hire rather than hiring outside of the team. New England has been well known for hiring an inside name on the coaching staff rather than find a name on the outside. With a defensive coordinator now hired, the Patriots will now be looking for a coordinator on the opposite side of the ball with Bill O’Brien leaving to became the Offensive Coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus.
Covington, who is 34, may seem to be a perfect fit for the job considering he knows the system well. With most of the defensive staff staying and names such as Matthew Judon and Christian Gonzalez returning from injury, Patriots are going to need to get busy to make some moves with all the money that they are going to spend in the offseason. New England currently holds the third overall pick and are projected to select a quarterback with assets that need to be re-signed as well such as Kyle Dugger and Anfernee Jennings on defense.
