Patriots announce Drake Maye as new starting Quarterback

The Drake Maye era has officially begun in New England as the Patriots are set to start the rookie Quarterback sensation this Sunday against the Houston Texans. After a 1-4 start behind Jacoby Brissett who’s averaging just 139.2 passing yards per game, this wasn’t a surprise to most. The Patriots need a spark after averaging just 12.4 points per game the first 5 weeks into the year, and Drake Maye will certainly provide that. For the passing attack, the biggest issue besides the offensive line has been Jacoby Brissett’s lack of anticipation, often holding on to the ball for too long when he does have time to throw and receivers do get open. While Maye was in college, this was a strength of his as he was usually in a RPO-heavy, quick-pass offense. Playing like this can hopefully make things easier for the offensive line as they won’t need to deal with blitz heavy defenses if he can get the ball out fast.

Maye’s ability to make plays with his legs will give a huge boost to the Patriot offense as well. Especially with a struggling and banged-up offensive line. The offensive line could prove as a problem for Maye, as New England has started five different combinations in five weeks of football, allowing a league high 48.3 percent pressure rate. Thankfully, the New England starting five against Miami all left the game healthy. Next week won’t be any easier however, as the Houston Texans defense is first in the league in pressure rate at 42 percent.

The Patriots and Texans will meet in the regular season for the first time since a 25-22 New England win at Houston on Oct. 10, 2021. The Patriots are 7-0 all-time at home against Houston with a 5-0 regular season record and 2-0 postseason record. They will look to continue that streak on Sunday with their new starting quarterback.
