Minnesota Vikings Review Weeks 1-5
The NFC North has had an amazing start to the season, with all of its teams being over .500. The Minnesota Vikings (5-0) lead the division, and the NFL as one of only two undefeated teams.
When asked by Mirror U.S. Sports, Minnesota safety Harrison Smith talked about how the staff and team chemistry have contributed to the team’s streak of wins.
"We just have a great group of players, great group of coaches,” Smith said. “There's a real chemistry within the whole team. We enjoy playing this game, of course, but we enjoy playing together. We communicate, we know what each guy has to do and we're being put in the right position to get the best out of each other. It's real fun to play in right now."
The Vikings boast two blowout victories over the New York Giants (2-3) and the Houston Texans (4-1) in 28-6 and 34-7 victories respectively.
The other three games have been close victories against the San Francisco 49ers (2-3), Green Bay Packers (3-2), and, just last week, the New York Jets (2-3).
For Minnesota, it’s been a high scoring offense that’s continued to dominate games since head coach Kevin O’Connell was hired.
The Vikings have the 17th ranked overall offense according to ESPN, averaging 323.2 yards per game (YDS/G). Their passing offense is ranked 18th in the NFL, averaging 207.8 YDS/G and their rushing offense is ranked 17th while averaging 115.4 YDS/G.
What really sets them apart offensively is their scoring offense, which is ranked sixth in the league averaging 27.8 points per game (PTS/G).
Their defense is somewhat of a mixed bag. On one hand, Minnesota boasts the second best run defense and fourth best scoring defense. The run defense averages 67.2 YDS/G, the scoring defense only allows 15.2 PTS/G.
The Vikings overall defense and passing defense, however, leave much to be desired.
Overall, the Vikings defense is 17th in the league, averaging 330.2 YDS/G.
The passing defense has had rough times stopping opposing offenses. Minnesota averages 263 YDS/G, which is the third worst in the NFL. The passing defense has been a key reason why the Vikings in three of their wins, have been in close, one-score finishes.
Against the Packers, the Vikings allowed quarterback Jordan Love to throw for 389 yards and four touchdowns.
That is where the defense comes in. Minnesota leads the league in interceptions with 11 and also is second in the league in sacks with 20.
The team is able to constantly pressure opposing offenses with dangerous edge rushers in linebacker Jonathan Greenard (4), LB Pat Jones II (5), and LB Andrew Van Ginkel (3) leading the charge against opposing quarterbacks.
The Vikings will have the week of on bye, after that, they face a another divisional opponent in the Detroit Lions (3-1). Detroit will be facing off against the Dallas Cowboys (3-2) who are looking to get another win.
