NFC East Injuries to Watch for Week 4 and Beyond
Demarcus Lawrence, Dallas Cowboys defensive end
During Thursday Night Football against the New York Giants, standout defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence suffered an injury in the third quarter. After further evaluation, it was reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that Lawrence suffered a mid-foot sprain and he is expected to miss at least four weeks.
Lawrence was the Cowboys sack leader with three sacks over the first four weeks of the season. The Cowboys did end up winning the game 20-15 but the loss to Lawrence may leave fans feeling just as bad as a loss.
Micah Parsons, Dallas Cowboys Linebacker
The turf at MetLife Stadium claimed another victim as superstar linebacker Micah Parsons also went down during the 20-15 Dallas win over the Giants. Parsons had to be helped off the field and carted to the locker room late in the fourth quarter in a scene that left fans across the league worried for the worst.
The Cowboys have ten days between games which will give some extra time for both Parsons and Lawrence to recover from their injuries. While Lawrence will not be back, the hope is that Parsons will be able to play against the currently undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers for their Week 5 matchup. If Parsons is not ready for that game, Cowboys personnel are hopeful that he will return for their game against the Detroit Lions the following week.
Devonta Smith, Philadelphia Eagles Wide receiver
During the fourth quarter of last weeks game against the New Orleans Saints, star WR Devonta Smith was being pushed back by two Saints defenders upon receiving a catch. No whistle was blown despite Smith being moved many yards back. Rookie defensive tackle Khristian Boyd played through the whistle but the hit he gave was in the neck/head area. Smith was immediately placed into concussion protocol and left the game. According to the official Eagles injury report, Smith has been listed as out for this week’s game in Tampa Bay.
Ahead of the game against the Buccaneers, it was anticipated that Smith would be out for this week given the nature of last week’s hit. This is a damaging blow to an already thin Eagles WR room. Britain Covey has also been listed as out and will miss time with a fractured scapula. This leaves the Eagles with a combination of Jahan Dotson, Parris Campbell and Johnny Wilson at WR.
A.J. Brown, Philadelphia Eagles Wide receiver
A.J. Brown has missed the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints game after putting up a 100-yard performance against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. Without Brown, the Eagles offense has taken a noticeable dip. In his steed, Devonta Smith and Jahan Dotson have held things down to a decent level with TE Dallas Goedert posting career highs in yards and receptions against the Saints.
Brown was officially listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report. It is uncertain whether Brown will play as it stands now, but if he is able to return it would be a massive bolster to a WR room that features Jahan Dotson as its top option outside of Goedert.
Austin Ekeler, washington Commanders Running back
The Commanders have started the seasons 2-1 and Austin Ekeler has been a major contributor to that success. Ekeler’s experience and running style has given rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels a reliable option out of the backfield for running and passing downs. Ekeler went down in Week 3 in the Commanders’ win over the Cincinnati Bengals with an apparent concussion.
Following Friday’s injury report, Ekeler has officially been listed as OUT. Without the reliable veteran, it will be worth \watching to see what the Commanders to do help Daniels in the meantime.
Malik nabers, New York Giants wide receiver
Malik Nabers has proven to be a force to be reckoned with on an otherwise lackluster New York Giants team. So, when Nabers went down late in the Giants 15-20 loss over NFC East division rival Dallas Cowboys, it was just another punch to the gut for a Giants team who looks like they could be one of the worst teams in the league this season.
Nabers wound up being diagnosed with a concussion. The Giants have a few extra days for Nabers to get back onto the field given they played on Thursday night, and it could prove to be just what the team needs to get their star back. It will be worth monitoring if the Giants opt to play him or let him rest and make sure he comes back 100%.
