Jonathan Taylor Signs Massive Extension with Colts
After months of the Indianapolis Colts and running back Jonathan Taylor going back and forth on making a deal, they have both come to an agreement. Taylor gets a massive 3-year, $42 million extension with $26.5 million guaranteed. The relationships between Taylor and the Colts could only be saved by one thing, and that was a major deal in favor of Taylor like this one. He has been looking for a deal since the end of last season, and there was definitely uncertainty as to whether Taylor would ever play for the Colts again.
With the Colts now having a potential franchise quarterback in Anthony Richardson, a star running back in Taylor, and Michael Pittman Jr. as a solid wide receiver 1, the Colts are starting to look like a serious contender to win the AFC South.
The league as a whole has been straying away from paying star running backs and Taylor was a part of that group until now. Big names like Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, and Tony Pollard were in disagreements with their teams because they felt that they were not being paid as much as they should have. Their quarterbacks were getting massive deals with the Giants paid Daniel Jones a $40 Million/year contract, Jimmy Garoppolo a $17 Million/year contract, and Dak Prescott a $40 Million/year contract without any money going towards the running backs.
The Colts and Taylor could potentially show the league that paying running backs is still a necessity if Taylor has a year similar to his 2021 season where he arguably had the best season for a running back since Adrian Peterson in 2012.
