Joe Flacco Shines in Training Camp
There have been recent reports arising about backup quarterback Joe Flacco's training camp performance and how well the veteran has been performing.
Now entering his third season with the Jets organization, Flacco has been a great mentor to second-year quarterback Zach Wilson.
Flacco was acquired by the Jets in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for a sixth-round pick last season after Wilson went down with a PCL strain injury against the New England Patriots.
Flacco returned to the Jets after spending a season with the team in 2020. The Eagles decided they were better off with Gardner Minshew as the backup quarterback to Jalen Hurts and were willing to make a trade with the Jets who were without Wilson at the time.
With Flacco re-joining the Jets last season, it gave Wilson more of an opportunity to watch a polished veteran command the offense. It was also great to see Mike White be successful in the offensive scheme but after a 45-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 10, Saleh was ready to let the former Super Bowl MVP get a shot.
Flacco started the following game against the Miami Dolphins in Week 11 when he had great chemistry with receiver Elijah Moore who had eight receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown. Flacco threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns with a 101.6 passer rating. Flacco decided to re-sign with the Jets on a 1-year $3.5 million contract this offseason.
Flacco has been lighting up the defense thus far in training camp, which is not a surprise as he is mainly competing against the second-team defense.
Although Flacco has gotten a lot of attention in regards to his high level of play, the veteran has acknowledged that he is here to help mentor Zach Wilson. This has been the plan ever since Flacco rejoined the Jets organization, as this can be very helpful in Wilsonβs development to make a big second-year leap in the 2022 season.
Although Flacco noted that he still believes he can start in the league today. This makes sense as Flacco has shown no signs of deteriorating in the last two years. Flacco could be a viable option as a good bridge Quarterback for another organization, where he can have an opportunity to start full-time.
If the Jets get offered a trade for Flacco, what could the team get in return?
