Jared Goff’s Future in Detroit
Detroit just finished one of their best seasons ever, with Jared Goff leading them to the NFC Championship Game. At the beginning of the year, there were questions surrounding how long Jared Goff would stick around in Detroit. After the 2023 season, there is no question who will be leading the Detroit Lions for seasons to come.
Jared Goff was traded by the Los Angeles Rams in 2019 to the Detroit Lions where Detroit gave up their long-time quarterback Matthew Stafford. After years of trying to make things work with Stafford, he and Detroit mutually decided it was time to make the change. Jared Goff came in with questions floating around about his game. Whether he would be good enough with the new style of dual-threat quarterbacks coming into the game. Goff is one of the last pure pocket passers left in the NFL and it is impressive how accurate he can be when he’s got the right amount of time.
Jared’s strengths are his accuracy and his patience in the pocket. He can thread the needle to receivers like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta. He has a great offensive line that gives him plenty of time to make the best play. Goff is also known to not turn the ball over. In 2022, he had the best touchdown-interception ratio in the entire league. This season there were a couple of hiccups but overall, he protects the football well. He is a precision passer and knows who to get the ball to with the receiving talent in Detroit.
Goff’s weaknesses are his inaccuracy under pressure, along with his inability to run outside the pocket. Luckily, for Detroit, they have one of the best dual running-back system in the league with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. While it is important to note that Goff can’t run outside the pocket, he is also far more inaccurate when he’s under pressure. With these two weaknesses, it is something to think about. Detroit plays well into Goff’s weaknesses because they have a great offensive line and great talent in their running and receiving core. Jared Goff has shined in Detroit because they built a system that works well with him in it.
Jared Goff’s current contract is up this season, and Detroit will be in talks with him this offseason. With both parties looking to make an extension happen, Detroit seems to have embraced Goff as their leader. Jared Goff chants have been happening throughout the playoffs all through Detroit. Along with the city embracing Goff, he has done the same to the fans and team. Goff has talked about this love for the city and fans. He also loves being a part of this Detroit team and would “love” to sign an extension this offseason. The Lions had a strong season and playoff run, and it is no doubt Detroit’s front office is putting the numbers together to extend Goff this offseason.
