Ezekiel Elliott Signs With the New England Patriots

Foxborough, Massachusetts (PSF) - Another running back was signed last week, that would be Ezekiel Elliott. The former Cowboy was released by Dallas in March of this year. Elliott was cut for two reasons, his decline in play, and the massive amount of money he was owed due to his previous contract. Elliott was due for $16.7 million this upcoming season, that is an extreme amount owed to an aging player let alone a running back. For months Elliott did not sign with any teams, he received some interest from Philadelphia, New York, and Cinncinatti but no deal was ever finalized. Now, he will play for Bill Bellicheck and the Patriots. Elliott signed a one-year deal with New England. The deal includes a $3 million base salary and a $1 million signing bonus that can be worth up to $6 million with incentives.

This signing was a solid move for the Patriots. It doesn’t fully move the needle but it adds a solid backup to now solidify a nice one-two punch with Rhamondre Stevenson. Some are skeptical of the move due to Elliott’s lost step last season. You can’t blame people for thinking this way, it’s true that the seven-year back is not as explosive anymore. Though he cannot break out a 75-yard run, Elliott can still help a team in other ways. He is extremely effective in goal-line or short-yard situations. Elliott totaled 12 touchdowns last season, his longest run was only for 27 yards. Another strength he brings to the field is his pass-blocking, he’s one of the best backs at this skill.

Overall, if I had to rate this move I would give it a 6.5/10. The Patriots are getting a solid veteran running back who has been in numerous situations throughout his career. Yes, he is not as explosive as in prior years, but he can help diminish the punishment that Rhamondre Stevenson will have to endure. This will keep both backs fresh over the season allowing the Patriot’s running game to continue to thrive.
