Damar Hamlin United America Like No One Else
Buffalo, New York (PSF) — America time and time again come together in times of crisis. It doesn’t matter your skin color, religion, sexuality, or what sports teams you root for. Two world wars, 9/11, etc. are times America united as one. But these events weren’t concentrated on one individual, they were focused on the country as a whole. When Damar Hamlin was taken off the field last Monday night, the whole country held their breath as they awaited news on his condition. All of a sudden, the high-stakes football game didn’t matter one bit. All that mattered was the well-being of Damar Hamlin. Prayers and well wishes poured onto social media. Even non-sports fans sent thoughts and prayers to Hamlin.
Throughout the week the support for Damar was one of the most powerful moments this country has seen in modern history. Candles and signs were brought outside of the hospital where Damar was brought. Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky even prayed for Damar live on television.
There has never been such an outreach of support for one individual from across the country maybe ever in the history of American sports. Damar’s recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. This is the perfect example of the power of prayer, as Damar brought an entire country that has been fiercely divided for years, to recognize something bigger than themselves.
On that frightful night, there were no Bills and Bengals fans, no Democrats or Republicans, just one country in prayer, hoping that someone’s life was spared. In a long and emotional week, those prayers were answered. Damar Hamlin still has a long way to go on his road to recovery, but his story will be told for generations. One remarkable recovery for one remarkable person.
