Up to this point, the Dallas Cowboys off-season has looked lackluster. They have lost key players and signed average players instead of star players. Jerry Jones’ draft claims may liven up their off-season news.

The Cowboys owner, Jones has expressed interest in wanting to move up in this year's NFL Draft. Specifically, Jones has aimed his focus on possibly doing this in the first three rounds of the draft, per Rob Phillips Dallas Cowboys article.

Right now these are the following picks the Cowboys have in descending order from round one to three, listed in Daniel Chavkin’s Sports Illustrated article: 24, 56, and 88. One notable player the Cowboys were able to draft at 24 is Dez Bryant, Dallas’ number one wide receiver and one of the best in the league during his career.

“If we had a chance to and somebody that we had really coveted was sitting down there at the bottom, then we could trade up and get him,” Phillips quoted Jones.

Some of the biggest needs of the Cowboys right now are offensive line and wide receiver. Depending on how the draft goes, moving up to take players like Tyler Linderbaum, Zion Johnson, Chris Olave, or Jameson Williams sounds intriguing.

It wouldn’t be wise for Cowboys fans to get their hopes up though. Per Phillips, the last time they moved up in round one dates back to 2012, when they obtained the sixth spot and selected LSU Corner back Morris Claiborne. His career with the Cowboys didn’t live up to expectations.

Phillips dates the last time the Cowboys moved up in rounds one through three back to 2014, moving up to get Defensive End DeMarcus Lawrence. Unlike the move for Claiborne, this decision has been paying off for the Cowboys.

In agreement with Phillips, this goes to say that this doesn’t occur much in Dallas. The occasions this has happened has produced mixed results.

In the NFL Draft, the Cowboys have recently done well, selecting Wide Receiver CeeDee Lamb two years ago and Linebacker Micah Parsons last year. They could sit tight as Lamb fell to them. With Parsons the Cowboys traded back in the first round two spots instead of up, going from 10 to 12, to take the young lion, per Chavkin.

Both players have had success and look like stars in the making. So much so that Jones hopes to find more players like them, said Mike Fisher in his Fan Nation article.

It looks like they’re sticking to what they deem best for them. Drafting talent has worked out well

for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. With the draft approaching soon, although trading up isn’t much of the Cowboys way, “it’s a possibility this year if the scenario arises,” said Phillips.
