KANSAS CITY, Mo. (PSF) - Chris Jones’ holdout is finally over. After missing the first game of the season, the Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive centerpiece has officially agreed to a deal. Around 5PM ET time on Sept. 11, Adam Schefter reported the first information of the deal.

The details of the contract were released around 9 a.m. ET the following morning. Per Ian Rapoport, Chris Jones did not sign an extension and will remain on a one-year contract. His base salary remains the same, sitting at a solid $19.5 million. In addition to this, however, Jones can now earn up to $25 million in incentives, which is something a player like Jones can easily accomplish.

This news is exciting for both Chris Jones and the Chiefs organization alike. For Jones, who has been holding out since the beginning of training camp, this incentive-based contract will allow him to earn what he believes he is worth and will also help to pay the fines he received for skipping practice over the off season.

For the Chiefs, they are getting back their All-Pro defensive tackle of whom they are desperately in need of. During Week One’s game against the Detroit Lions, the Chiefs’ defensive front held up well against the run, but their defense against the passing game struggled. Multiple blitz stunts had to be run to generate pressure on the quarterback, and the Chiefs saw only one pressure generated from their generic four-man front.

A player like Chris Jones, who racked up 29 QB hits and 15.5 sacks in 17 games last year, will be a great relief on the defensive front. With their elite defensive tackle shouldering a heavy defensive load, the Chiefs’ defense will be able to cause pressure while also dropping more players into coverage.

In other words, expect the Chiefs’ defense to be a much better unit with Chris Jones in the lineup. Jones is expected to return and make his season debut this weekend versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.
