AFC South Midseason Review

It is Week 9 of the NFL season which means we are at the halfway point of the regular season.

If there is anything to know about the AFC South, it is by far the worst division in the NFL. Only one team is above .500 which speaks highly of how uncompetitive this division has been so far.

In this article, I will be giving my takeaways on each team’s season so far.

The only team that is above .500 is the Titans who are on a 5-game winning streak after starting the season 0-2. Derrick Henry is once again the focal point of this offense and has had to carry the league-worst passing offense. The Titans have only produced 1158 passing yards which are the least in the league. Their defense started out shaky at first such as their run defense which ranked bottom half of the league. Now against the run, the defense has skyrocketed to being in the top five. They have already won their two games against the Colts who most had winning the division before the season started. It is basically the Titans division to lose at this point.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts experiment with Matt Ryan has not panned out which has altered the course of how the Colts are looking into probably drafting a quarterback this upcoming draft. Sam Ehlinger has taken over for now and maybe he surprises in the second half of the season. But this offensive line has struggled mightily so far having given up 26 sacks which are fourth most in the league so far. Injuries have also gotten the best for the Colts as Jonathan Taylor has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury that has made his season underwhelming so far. On the defensive side star linebacker, Shaquille Leonard has only played in two games so far. The firing of offensive coordinator Marcus Brady pretty much sums up how dreadful this season has been for the Colts.

Jacksonville Jaguars

This team has shown to be better coached under Doug Pederson than Urban Meyer was last season, to say the least. The Jacksonville Jaguars have come close to winning these past couple of weeks and that is something they need to work on. The jury is still out on Trevor Lawrence and he has shown flashes here and there but there will be those games where he throws bad interceptions or he takes ill-advised sacks. Maybe there is a reason why they traded for suspended wide receiver Calvin Ridley from the Falcons but we will have to wait until next year for that connection. Travis Etienne looks really good coming off an injury last season as he just posted back to back 100 yard rushing games. Cornerback Tyson Campbell has been making waves as a top corner in the league this year and really this defense has not looked bad so far this season. Although they have a losing record, this team has shown that they can compete.

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans have the least amount of talent on their team and are probably the weakest team in the league. The bright spot is that Dameon Pierce looks like he is going to be a fun running back to watch in the future. Not trading Brandin Cooks at the deadline was very confusing since he could have gotten the Texans a lot of draft capital for the future. This is a rebuilding roster so do not expect much from them.
