I went to bed last night confused, bewildered, and bamboozled by general manager Ryan Poles allowing cornerback Jaylon Johnson to seek a trade. While it is currently unclear what the Bears are seeking in exchange for him, let alone what Johnson wants for a new contract.

I wake up this morning to see Brad Biggs hearing the Bears may add a defensive lineman. I immediately thought two people, both from the Washington Commanders.

It either would be defensive end Chase Young, former NFL defensive rookie of the year and pro bowler. Or it would be DE Montez Sweat, one of the most underrated EDGE rushers in the league.

Sweat has a total of 34.5 career sacks and has 5.5 alone this season. Poles decided to go for the latter.

Poles got one of the best pass rushers in the league. Sure the price was a bit steep. In exchange for Sweat, we sent this year’s 2nd round pick.

Poles has done this before when he traded for wide receiver Chase Claypool. However, this is different. Claypool had character issues and seemed not to give much effort. Sweat is all about effort and helps our struggling defense in so many ways, especially in the run game.

There is one caveat, Sweat is on an expiring deal. So likely Poles will have to extend him soon. Then there’s also Johnson. How much will he command as the trade deadline ends in a few hours. Not much time left.
