$25 Million or Bust: Deebo Samuel linked to The Dallas Cowboys?
Wednesday morning April 20th, star wide receiver Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers. Deebo Samuel is truly a unique player in the NFL and not many players can complete the tasks he is given. Samuel, prior to requesting for a trade, was holding out due to contract negotiations. Samuel expressed that he will not disclose why he wants out of San Francisco. Later, he appeared on Twitter, liking an image of himself photoshopped in a Dallas Cowboys jersey. Is there a realistic shot for Deebo Samuel to end up in Dallas?
Deebo Samuel’s natural position is wide receiver; however, he was also used as a running back. Standing at six feet tall, 215 pounds, his frame allows him to fill this role with ease. Combined with Mike Shanahan’s offensive prowess, the 49ers made an impressive late run in the regular season and entered the playoffs as one of the hottest teams. Samuel’s production elevated the 49ers, making a deep playoff run before losing to divisional rival, Los Angeles Rams, in the NFC Conference Championship game.
Samuel was able to score 14 total touchdowns in the regular season and posted nearly 1,800 offensive yards which ranked 3rd in the National Football League. For wide receivers that played a minimum of 8 games, Deebo Samuel ranked 1st in yards per reception, as well as ranking 3rd in 20+ yard plays. Needless to say, Deebo Samuel is one of the most explosive players in the NFL. After the Cowboys lost Amari Cooper, they could surely use a player of Samuel’s caliber.
Will the Jones family make a run to get Deebo to Dallas? This is unlikely, yet not impossible. Stephen Jones appeared on 105.3 The Fan, stating, “I don’t think you win the Super Bowl in the offseason.” Implying that to better your NFL team, you need to build through the NFL Draft. Despite his comments, Jones also mentioned that the team “is not done yet in free agency.” The last time the Dallas Cowboys made a blockbuster trade was in 2018, when they traded for star wide receiver Amari Cooper, who was recently traded away to the Cleveland Browns. It is unlikely for the Dallas Cowboys to acquire Deebo Samuel because of the price it will cost them.
Deebo Samuel has one year left on his rookie contract and he is evidently looking to sign a new contract. This would cost the Dallas Cowboys at least two to three drafts picks, including their first round pick this year. Along with the draft compensation, Tory Dandy, Deebo Samuel’s agent noted on his personal Instagram, “If it ain’t 25M a year we don’t want it”. My prediction would be that he is looking for at least $60 million to $70 million in guaranteed money based on the recent NFL market price for wide receivers. This price may be too high for the Jones family, as they are not typically big spenders on players they have not drafted. Although the Cowboys acquired Amari Cooper through trade only four years ago, history still does not support this trade.
This has been the most eventful NFL off-season in history. Deebo Samuel is unlikely to end up in a Dallas Cowboys uniform, nevertheless, the 2022 NFL off-season has proven to be an unpredictable one. Deebo Samuel wishes to be one of the highest paid wide receivers in the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys could fulfill Samuel’s desires.
