For the past few years, the Tennessee Titans have been playing around with the idea of a new stadium in the music city. There’s nothing wrong with their current stadium, Nissan Stadium, as it is a beautiful structure in a great part of Nashville, but there is one thing it’s lacking: a roof. 

The city of Nashville has been growing rapidly for a few years now, and sports fans are dying for a Super Bowl to be hosted there. Tourism in the city has been booming, with all the different bars on Broadway being everyone’s main destination. Football fans shut the streets of Nashville down with the 2019 NFL draft being hosted on Lower Broadway. At the time, it ended up being the NFL’s largest festival footprint ever made for the draft, given that there were also free public activities surrounding Nissan Stadium.

A few weeks ago, it was announced that the Titans reached an agreement with Nashville Mayor John Cooper to build a $1.2 billion domed stadium, amassing 1.7 million square feet, with a capacity of around 60,000 people. It still needs to be approved by the metro council, but it is likely it will be approved. The new stadium is slated to be located just east of Nissan Stadium, but the deal requires that Nissan Stadium be demolished.

The Titans are using a Kansas City based architecture firm, MANICA, and a Nashville based firm, Hastings, to design renderings and help with site plannings. The team wants the new stadium to be used for more than just football. Titans president and CEO Burke Nihill stated, “We’re focused on designing a stadium capable of hosting a prestigious international event on a Sunday and a steady flow of impactful community programming later that same week.”  The Titans currently allow Tennessee State University’s football team to play in the stadium for a few games a year, and this deal will be continued into the new stadium. They won’t have to pay rent in the new stadium.

The renderings of the new stadium look beautiful. There are outdoor porches and terraces overlooking Downtown Nashville, a variety of hangout spots for fans, and a translucent roof. The Titans also plan for this stadium to be high-tech and use sustainable materials. Their goal is to achieve a U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold certification. This certification provides the framework for efficient, healthy, and cost-saving green buildings. Beautiful and ecologically friendly: what more can you ask for in a stadium?

An architect has not yet been chosen for this project, so the full architectural design process won’t proceed until a later date.
