USC outlast LSU in Baton Rouge
Jan 25th A marquee matchup of two NCAAW juggernauts faced off in Women’s College hoops. The undefeated #1 ranked University of South Carolina took on their conference foes #9 Louisiana State University. This game featured some of women’s hoops' most electric future stars including SC’s Guard Raven Johnson, LSU’s Guard Hailey Van Lith, and last year's co-player of the year Center Angel Reese. This game was one of the most anticipated matchups of the year as it could also be a preview of a potential final four matchup.
LSU led at the half behind a strong performance on the boards from guard Mikaylah Williams. Up 41-36 at home LSU showed some promise. After the half South Carolina was able to fight back and outscore LSU by 11 points in the second half.
With star player Angel Reese picking up her fifth foul late in the fourth causing her to foul out with a little over four minutes left in the game. South Carolina was able to close out the game with a special performance from their Sophomore guard Raven Johnson.
Both squads starting lineups all reach double digits in the scoring column. LSU’s top performer of the night was junior guard Aneesah Morrow who grabbed herself a double-double on the stats sheet with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Along with her big night on the boards she also dished out three assists, two steals and two blocks. SC’s top performer goes to senior center Kamilla Cardoso. She was able to fill up the stat sheets on defense after getting two blocks, two steals and eight rebounds. She also was able to score 11 points to go along with her impressive defensive performance.
After the game reporters caught up with South Carolina’s head coach Dawn Staley in which a reporter asked her about the hostile crowd in Baton Rouge not being too friendly to her. To which her response was “Actually they were… They were calling me boo.”
