Texas Tech Upsets Texas at Home For Their Third Straight Win Against A Ranked opponent
Lubbock, Texas (PSF) - In a Big 12 Conference rivalry game between two Texas teams, the Texas Tech Red Raiders were able to pull off the upset of the number six ranked Texas Longhorns. Texas Tech used a strong first half finish and solid second half defense to beat Texas 74-67.
The game was close until a De’Vion Harmon three-pointer before halftime gave him 21 points in the half and the Red Raiders a nine-point halftime lead. They continued to build and maintain a lead in the second half and would never give their lead back.
Texas Tech was led by 25 points from Harmon. Kevin Obanor chipped in 19 points and 7 rebounds. The Longhorns got 23 points and six assists from Marcus Carr, while Dylan Disu added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Texas Tech has struggled this season with a record of just 14-12. However, their last three wins have come against teams ranked inside the top 15 in the AP Poll.
The Big 12 Conference has been the best conference in college basketball this season from top to bottom. It’s possible that eight of the 10 teams in the conference make the NCAA Tournament. While Texas Tech likely won’t be one of them, if they can put together a run and win their conference tournament, they would get an automatic bid that would guarantee them a spot.
This is all Texas Tech can really hope for at this point. Their at-large resume simply isn’t good enough to get consideration for an at-large bid. As for Texas, they’re securely in the NCAA Tournament, but this loss will certainly hurt their seed come tournament time. Recently contending for a number one seed, this loss likely means the Longhorns will get a two or three seed at this point.
Texas Tech goes on the road this weekend to take on West Virginia in their next game, and Texas will host Oklahoma this weekend as well as teams continue to fight in the competitive Big 12 Conference as the regular season winds down.
