Breaking Down the Fall Camp Injuries So Far: Which Ones Really Matter?
With the season just weeks away and fall camp underway across the country, a number of injuries have emerged. In this article, I'll break down which injuries are major, which are minor, and how these developments could impact the teams involved as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Charles jagusah- notre dame
As I mentioned in my Coaches Poll Reaction article earlier this week, the Irish suffered a significant setback when their starting left tackle, Charles Jagusah, was sidelined with a shoulder injury during last Saturday’s practice. Jagusah, a highly-rated four-star prospect out of high school, was someone Head Coach Marcus Freeman had placed considerable confidence in as a starter. With this, I’ve already expressed my concerns about the depth at tackle for the Irish and how it could impact their major games. With Jagusah out, the team now faces a choice between relying on Tosh Baker, who has a few starts under his belt, or turning to inexperienced freshmen like Anthonie Knaap or Sullivan Absher.
Teddy prochazka- nebraska
If you were high on Nebraska going into 2024, one reason might have been their strong offensive line, which was set to return nearly every key contributor from 2023. That confidence took a hit when starting left tackle Teddy Prochazka tore his ACL in Monday’s practice. With Nebraska likely to start true freshman Dylan Raiola at quarterback, the left tackle position is crucial for protecting his blind side. Now, Nebraska will likely move guard Turner Corcoran back to left tackle, a position where he started his career. While his previous play at that position was dreadful, it was under the prior coaching staff, and he’s likely improved since then. The other option could be starting freshman Gunnar Gottula, but given Nebraska’s deeper roster at guard compared to tackle, it’s likely that Matt Rhule will choose to move Corcoran to left tackle.
Montrell Johnson- florida
As most of the world has realized by now, the Florida Gators face the toughest schedule in college football in 2024, and they’ll need all of their playmakers to navigate it successfully. Running back Montrell Johnson is one of those key players, and his role could be crucial for the Gators' success. Johnson recently underwent a minor knee procedure after tweaking it in practice, but fortunately, reports from Gainesville remain positive and optimistic that he should be ready to return for the season.
CJ Baxter- Texas
Unfortunately for Baxter and Texas fans, this injury is far from minor. Earlier this week, Texas’ projected starting running back, CJ Baxter—whom I believe is a future first-round draft pick—suffered a knee injury, and it was announced on Wednesday that his season is over. This is a devastating blow and one that could significantly impact Texas down the stretch. While Jayden Blue is certainly capable of taking on the lead back role, facing a Baxter-Blue duo would have been much more intimidating than Blue and whichever young back steps up in his absence. Despite this setback, I still see the Longhorns as a top-four team with strong Playoff potential, but Baxter’s presence would have been a game-changer in their biggest matchups. Now, someone else will have to step into those big shoes.
