Big 12 Preseason Voting

According to the media's preseason voting, the Texas Longhorns are the favored team to win the Big 12 title in the 2023 season. They received 41 first-place votes and a total of 886 points, comfortably surpassing defending champion Kansas State, which garnered 14 first-place votes and 858 points. This is the first time since 2009, and the first time since the Big 12 eliminated divisions in 2011, that the Longhorns have been selected as the preseason favorites.

Oklahoma, which will be joining Texas in the SEC in 2024, was picked to finish third by the voting media members. The Sooners received four first-place votes and 758 points. Texas Tech and TCU, both coming off successful runs to the College Football Playoff national championship last season, rounded out the top five teams in the predicted order of finish.

The Big 12 will welcome UCF, BYU, Houston, and Cincinnati as new members in 2023. However, the media does not have much confidence in these teams contending for the conference title. UCF was chosen eighth in the poll, the highest ranking among the four newcomers. BYU was placed at 11th, ahead of Houston and Cincinnati. The media did not show much faith in West Virginia, predicting the Mountaineers to finish last.

The Big 12 Championship Game is scheduled to be held on December 2 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It will feature the top two teams in the conference based on their regular-season records. In the previous season, Kansas State upset TCU to win its first outright conference title since 2003. Despite the loss, TCU went on to earn a College Football Playoff berth, defeating Michigan in the semifinals before ultimately losing to Georgia in the national championship game.
