Red River Rivalry Blowout
This past Saturday marked the 120th time these two teams met in the Red River game, and Texas came out on top, beating the Sooners 34-3. Oklahoma's only points came off a field goal in the first quarter.
The Red River game between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners is one of the most well-known rivalries in college football. In their first matchup in the SEC, Texas showed why they are ranked number one.
The Longhorns had full control of the game the entire time, with their defense being the collective MVP of this matchup. Allowing only 148 passing yards and 89 rushing yards, with no single running back reaching over 50 yards. On top of that, they were in the backfield a lot on Saturday, racking up five sacks and forcing two fumbles.
Texas’ offense was firing on all cylinders with quarterback Quinn Ewers back in action. He threw for 199 yards and a touchdown, with his only blemish being a single interception for the day. The best part of their offense came on the ground as running back Quintrevion Wisner rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown off only 13 carries. In total, they rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns as a unit on Saturday, giving Oklahoma’s defensive line a beating.
As for the Sooners, they continue to look slow on both sides of the ball, as they have through the first half of the season. Their offense is only averaging 24 points per game through six games. Their defense has continued to allow big yardage plays and has not put much pressure on opposing team quarterbacks. Oklahoma has yet to win against a ranked team, and with both losses against SEC teams, their playoff hopes are looking dimmer.
After this game, Texas prepares for possibly its biggest game of the season against the number five Georgia Bulldogs. With the momentum from this game, the Longhorns have high hopes.
