Providence Friars get Overtime Win in a Huge Upset Over #19 Creighton
Providence College grabs a major upset victory at home against 19th ranked Creighton in overtime in an important Big East Conference matchup. This was a crucial win for Providence to keep their hopes of making the March Madness tournament alive. The score was tied 75-75 with 1:14 left in regulation. Creighton’s Steven Ashworth hit a 3-pointer to put Creighton up by three, and then with about 24 seconds left, Providence’s star Devin Carter hit a very deep 3-pointer from nearly half court to match him. With regulation ending in a 78-78 tie, the game went to overtime. In overtime, a combination of Devin Carter and Josh Oduro made big offensive plays to will their team to victory with a finishing score of 91-87.
Carter and Oduro each had outstanding games, as it seems is necessary for them to put their team in a position for a chance to win games, since the Byce Hopkins injury. Oduro finished the game with 32 points and 12 rebounds, and Carter added 28 points and 11 rebounds. This was a big bounce back win for them after losing two consecutive games. The first was a tough battle against #1 ranked UConn, and then soon after they were blown out in a game they were favored in against Vilanova. Providence stepped up their shooting and scoring after shooting 29% from the field and only scoring 50 points against Vilanova, improving to shooting 47% and scoring 91 against a better team in Creighton.
"Our guys battled through adversity tonight." Head Coach Kim English said. "They found a way, especially in the second half, to get the win. They were great. I am especially proud of them tonight."
Providence moves to 15-8 overall and 6-6 in Conference play as they currently sit in 7th in the Big East. The Friars gain momentum as they badly need to win as many games as possible the rest of the season for the best chances at making the March Madness tournament. Their next matchup is against Butler this Saturday, who is currently tied with Providence for seeding in the Big East. Providence does have an advantage over them as they won in their first matchup of the season. That was when Providence still had Hopkins, so the dynamic of this matchup the second time around will be much different. Nonetheless, Providence is looking for a win to climb the rankings in the Big East, as well as give themselves hope for March Madness.
