North Carolina State Outlasts North Carolina, Punches Ticket to Tourney
In another edition of a matchup between in-state rivals, the North Carolina State Wolfpack(22-14) beat the North Carolina Tar Heels(27-7) by a score of 84-76, according to ESPN. The win was especially shocking considering the effort North Carolina State had poured into the ACC Tournament as a whole, seeing as the game against North Carolina was the fifth game played in a row for NC State.
The Wolfpack entered the ACC Tournament as the 10th seed, but quickly proved that the seeding was not indicative of the team’s talent. After beating Louisville 94-85 in the first round of the Tournament(according to the official ACC Tournament Bracket), the Wolfpack won three games straight heading into the ACC Final, beating teams such as the seventh-seeded Syracuse Orange, the second-seeded Duke Blue Devils, and the third-seeded Virginia Cavaliers prior to taking down the first-seed North Carolina Tar Heels.
Though the win was a shocking one for Tar Heel fans across the nation, North Carolina was still able to secure a number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament while additionally having the potential to play their first two games in their home state of North Carolina. North Carolina State, on the other hand, was given an 11-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Tar Heels will take on either Howard or Wagner in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, while the North Carolina State Wolfpack will have a matchup against the Texas Tech Red Raiders coming their way.
