Looking at the “Most Talented Position Groups in College Football”
On Friday, 247Sports released their list of the most talented position groups of all of college football as we began to look towards the season. An intriguing list that seemed to take into account both past experience and potential there were several different teams featured with players who are yet to even touch the field. Despite it being early July, it’s exciting to preview these teams and the key units that talented teams will rally around for the coming season. The top ten units in order include:
10. Texas QB Room
9. LSU Linebackers
8. Penn State Running Backs
7. Clemson Linebackers
6. Georgia Secondary
5. Michigan Offensive Line
4. Georgia Defensive Line
3. Michigan Running Backs
2. USC QB Room
1.Ohio State Wide Receivers
A more than fair list that includes several All Conference and All American individuals who should expect to thrive in the 2023 season. However, I think it’s important to understand the individuals who are gonna make up these units outside the obvious starters or stars. Starting with the top end of this of the projected top three units from 247 Sports, Michigan RB’s, USC QB’s, and Ohio State’s wideouts.
Michigan Running Backs
Rather than a room, this is more aptly described as a duo. The running backs for Michigan feature two names in college football that everyone should know and if you don’t you will soon, Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. This is by far the best one two combo in all of CFB and should be a key reason that Michigan is very strong contenders to repeat as Big Ten champions. The name that ended the season on a strong note was Donovan Edwards after Corum went down with injuries as he nearly finished with over a 1,000 yards rushing all while doing it with elite efficiency averaging over seven yards a carry. He shined and carried the Michigan offense through the last three games, especially in the Ohio State matchup where he couldn’t be stopped finishing with over 200 yards on the ground. As impressive as that is Blake Corum was one of the top Heisman contenders before injuries halted his campaign. Previous to this he was forced throughout the year where at one point had eight straight 100 yard rushing performances. These two should run through the Big Ten as their should be better balance between the backs now that there is a general idea what both of these guys are capable of.
USC QB Room
This position group is very much different than the one before as it is really based on the potential and the room for the players to grow. Obviously it's headlined by one of the best players and hopeful number one draft pick, Caleb Williams, but the names behind him are the ones that bring great intrigue for the Trojan program. As of now, the USC depth chart after Caleb Williams includes Miller Moss RS SO, Malachi Nelson FR, and Jake Jenson RS SO. Respectively the USC QB room as it stands now features a Heisman favorite, a former four star, five star, and a power five BYU transfer. On top of all this there is another incoming 2023 five star that assures the depth isn’t going anywhere. Two things to look at is the development and who gets the second string nod in the fall. The second thing is retention and whether or not Lincoln Riley will be able to hold on to all this talent for the next several years which is currently one of the biggest rarities in all of college football.
Ohio State Wide Receivers
This is no surprise as it combines potential and experience to create undoubtedly the best and most exciting position group in all of college football, and it has been this way for the past several years it feels like. The OSU wideouts have been so dominant over the past several years it doesn’t matter who's behind center, they’re gonna make plays. Despite losing guys like Paris Campbell, Michael Thomas, Terry McLaurin, Garret Wilson, and Chris Olave, they continue to reload at the position as they are again stacked at this position. Looking at the depth chart now, it already features household names like Emeka Egbuka, Julian Fleming, and of course Marvin Harrison Jr.. Behind them are potential stars such as Jayden Ballard and Tate Carnell who have exhibited amazing upsides and will likely grow into stars over time. It’s safe to say that not only is Ohio State Wide Receiver U, but simply the best position group in all of college football.
