Kentucky Wildcats Lose to Oakland Golden Grizzlies in Stunning Upset
PITTSBURGH (PSF) — Out of all of the games in the first round, there weren’t many assumptions that the most embarrassing one to come would involve the Kentucky Wildcats. That is exactly what happened as they fell to the Horizon League champion Oakland Golden Grizzlies 80-76 in the first round.
The Golden Grizzlies were led by one man in the amazing upset. That being guard Jack Gohlke who scored 32 points while shooting 10-20 from beyond the arc while coming off the bench. He single-handedly stole a win from the Wildcats, who boasted one of the best offenses in the country coming into March Madness, while also boasting one of the worst defenses in the country.
The main scorer for the Wildcats was, as usual, fifth-year G Antonio Reeves who scored 27 points while shooting around 55% from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats also saw solid contributions from the likes of senior forward Tre Mitchell, freshman G Rob Dillingham, and freshman G Justin Edwards who each scored 14 points, 10 points, and 10 points respectively.
This is the third year straight that the Wildcats under Head Coach John Calipari haven’t made it to the Sweet 16, while also being the second year in the past three that the Wildcats were defeated in the first round of March Madness. The last time the team made it to the Sweet 16 was in the 2017-2018 season where they fell to the North Carolina Tar Heels.
With each embarrassing loss in the tournament, further questions will likely be raised in regards to Calipari’s job security. Will he return for another season in Lexington? Or will one of the greatest college coaches be let go? The answer remains unclear.
