Is Michigan Still the Best O-Line in the Country?

Ann Arbor, Michigan (PSF) - For two years, the Michigan Wolverines have established themselves as one of college football’s elite teams. Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines have done so in part from tremendous defense, the play of stellar running backs, and most importantly, dominant offensive line play.

For much of the school’s history, Michigan was the definition of a smash-mouth, control-the-trenches football team. The Wolverines dedicated themselves to returning to their roots, and as a result, have boasted the best offensive line in the country for two years straight.

In 2022, Michigan became the first team in history to win two consecutive Joe Moore Awards, a trophy awarded to the country’s top offensive line. Given the talent Michigan has upfront, it would be no surprise to see the Wolverines make it three in a row.

Michigan returns three of their five starters from last season; Zak Zinter (G), Trevor Keegan (G), and Karsen Barnhart (RT). The Wolverines also attracted Stanford center Drake Nugent and Arizona State tackle LaDarius Henderson from the transfer portal. Everyone on the Wolverines’ front line could be studying NFL playbooks this time next year.

Realistically, the only other team in the country with an offensive line that could give Michigan a run for their money, is the Georgia Bulldogs. The two-time defending champs also return three of their starters from last season. Pro Football Focus’ rankings have the Wolverines one and the Bulldogs at two.

The Bulldogs might have the best team in the country once again, but I’d be surprised if anyone surpassed Michigan as the best in the trenches.
