Wizards get hot late, beat Nets

On February 17, the Wizards traveled to Brooklyn for their second game of a back to back road trip. After a disappointing defeat to the rebuilding Indiana Pacers, things were not looking bright for Washington heading into the All-Star break. The Wizards were 26-31 heading into this game, and are in a bit of a pickle. They sit in 11th place in the east just one game back from the play-in tournament, but they have lost star guard Bradley Beal for the season. The team is trying to sneak into the play-in tournament and their win in Brooklyn was a step in the right direction.

The game was back and forth through three quarters until Washington scored 39 fourth quarter points. Young talent Rui Hachimura was the spark behind this win as he finished with 20 points and was 2-2 from three point land. Rookie Corey Kispert added 16 points and was 4-6 from three. Both players were very efficient from the field today and helped this team break away from the Nets late.

Ish Smith’s return has been a welcoming site for the organization. The fan favorite guard, who played for DC last season, has been a key piece since being acquired for Montrezl Harrell at the trade deadline. Ish has commanded the offense off the bench and has done a great job since his return. Ish was 7-10 from the field and finished with 15 points and 6 assists. A true point guard was needed in Washington to help unlock this young core’s potential and Ish has filled into that role nicely.

Deni Avdija continues to impress on the boards and on defense. Deni had 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block. He continues to prove that he can be a solid NBA defender and even added 13 points off the bench.

Washington can head into the All-Star break with their heads high after this win. Their newly acquired star Kristaps Porzingis will return from injury after the break and hope to lead this team to the playoffs. Washington enters the break 27-31 just one game from the play-in tournament and will take on the Spurs one week from today.
