What The Resigning of Kyrie Irving Means for the Dallas Mavericks

Kyrie Irving recently signed a three-year $126 Million contract with the Dallas Mavericks that will keep him paired up with Luka Doncic for the foreseeable future. The Mavs suffered an unfortunate end to the season, slipping from a fifth seed in the West to missing the playoffs entirely since Kyrie joined. In 20 games played for the Mavericks this season, he averaged 27 points per game on 51 percent from the field and 39.2 percent from behind the arc. However, the trade that took place for Kyrie happened late in the season when teams are traditionally looking to push for the playoffs and trying to develop him around Luka Doncic who is already the Mavericks franchise player didn’t go too well because they didn’t have enough time to develop with one another. Doncic is a do-it-all player who can create his shots, make plays for other teammates, and use his great size at the guard position to grab rebounds. Kyrie is primarily a ball-handling point guard who also uses his quickness to attack defenders and get to the rim. Having two playmakers and volume scorers on the same team doesn’t develop overnight and this is something that the Mavs didn’t understand when trading for Kyrie. What this means for the future is that the Mavs most likely were tanking deliberately to build further interior defensive depth at the Center position which has been severely lacking in the past few seasons and to make up for the losses incurred as a result of this trade. The Mavs also rushed the process in trying to upgrade the team at such a turning point in the season that it hurt their chances of maintaining playoff contention. Therefore, the Mavs should be an established playoff team in the Western Conference and should make a run back to the Conference Finals like they did two seasons prior. What this means for the Dallas Mavericks is that if Kyrie and Luka can stay healthy, the Mavs will be a better team than they were last year and be a consistent contender for years to come.
